Baseball is Back!

MLB is BackSpring is here. After a long snow-filled winter, we welcome the warmer weather, budding flowers, green lawns, and the return of baseball. As American as cherry pie, baseball is one of those sports you can’t help but love.

For those of you who follow Major League Baseball, check out our Channels page. We have mobile content for over 30 of the league’s premier teams at your fingertips. Download wallpapers, at-bat ringtones, or sign up to receive in-game alerts from your favorite team. If you head to a game this spring, be sure to check the game-day weather forecast before leaving the house without a jacket (or umbrella for those pesky rain delays). Stuck at work during a day game? No worries – subscribe to MLB’s Gameday Audio Service and listen from your desk.

We also have some fun stuff for those of you hitting the little league fields on Saturday mornings. A Baseball Tracker for Blackberry allows little league parents and coaches to track multiple players batting averages while sitting at the game. Instructional 5min.com videos are also available on the site, including a demo on “Working the Fence” in the outfield.

However you enjoy the game this spring, have fun and don’t be shy about ordering that hotdog. Go Red Sox!

Songs and Photos from South by Southwest (SXSW)

sxsw graphic

Every year music artists, filmmakers and techies descend on Austin, Texas for the massive showcase event: South by Southwest (SXSW). This year is no different with over 700 participating musicians. If you’re a music buff, it’s a rare opportunity to see all these great bands in one place, but it’s impossible to personally catch them all. You’re likely to miss what could be your next favorite band, while listening to something you’ll probably never like. Luckily in this new age of Internet file sharing, a Bit Torrent file has been posted that features a song from each of the 764 bands at SXSW. This must be illegal, right? No worries. All of these tracks are digital rights management (DRM) free, so they’re just a click away. Once you find a couple of songs you like, you can make your own ringtone for free from any of these tracks.

If you found yourself wishing that you were in Austin, but couldn’t quite justify the time or cost, then check out the SXSW stream of candid shots on, a new mobile photo sharing community. Some people at SXSW are snapping photos using their mobile phones and immediately posting them, so it’ll give you a flavor of what’s happening in real-time. Check out SnapMyLife from time to time to see what you can look forward to next year when you actually get there yourself.

Kanye vs. 50 Cent vs. Kenny G?

Seriously!

Kanye and 50 Cent recently went head-to-head, both releasing new albums with a big media splash in September. With about a million albums sold so far, Kanye seems to have won the crown as king of hip hop. But wait, there may be another dark horse contender… Kenny G!

Kanye vs. 50 Cent vs. Kenny G

According to our database, in the last month Kenny G’s Silhouette track was the 4th most popular converted ringtone on our site, behind Kanye West & Britney Spears, but before 50 Cent, who came in at number 11. Seems like our users have some interesting taste!

Our new Make My Ringone feature has quickly become one of the most popular items on the site. Since its launch last month, thousands of people have used it to personalize their phones with some pretty cool stuff (minus the Kenny G track, sorry). Check out what is ringing on your peers’ phones…

Make My Ringtone – Create your own custom ringtones for free

There has been plenty of commentary on Apple’s September 5th announcement, unveiling the ability for iPhone users to purchase and customize ringtones from the iTunes Music Store for an additional 99 cents. To buy a ringtone, you pay 99 cents for the song itself (if you don’t already have it) and another 99 cents to convert a 30 second snippet of the song into a ringtone. That’s right – it costs more to get a 30 second ringtone than it does to get the whole song. While this might not seem logical, the established price point for mobile phone ringtones is around $2.99 each, which is a world away from the $0.99 or less for a full music track from most online stores.

Often the convenience of buying a fun ringtone for your phone (and changing it according to your mood!) is well worth the $2.99, but many of us would like to take a CD we already own and turn our own music into a ringtone. Several companies have offered ways of doing this with expensive PC packages and hard-to-use websites.

Given our mission at Mobicious to provide everything for your mobile, we have developed an easier way of making your own custom ringtones.

Make My Ringtone is now available on the Mobicious site. The new feature allows you to take your own music and make a custom ringtone from your favorite song. It’s fun, free, and works on all major U.S. carriers including Verizon, and on most phones that support playing MP3 files.

To check it out for yourself,
1. Go to www.mobicious.com/ringtones/new
2. Select an MP3 file from your desktop
3. Choose and preview any 20 second clip
4. Send your custom ringtone to your mobile phone

Make My Ringtone builds on our foundation as the premier destination for consumers to discover the best content, services and applications available for their mobile phones. In this case, we’re helping people to “mobilize” media they already own. In the near future, we’ll be introducing new ways for people to get the most out of the media they already have scattered through the online universe.

Have fun making your own ringtones and exploring nearly 200,000 items of premium and free mobile content on http://www.mobicious.com.
